FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Therapy Session

HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE FOR A SESSION?

For those of you who are using the health insurance that I am in network for (Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and United Healthcare), the fee for each session is determined depending on how your insurance plan is set up.  Please contact your insurance company for information on what the amount you're responsible for covering is.  You can tell them that it is for "outpatient treatment for mental health".

For those of you who are using the health insurance that I am NOT in network for, or those who are paying without insurance, my fee for each session is $200.00

DO YOU ACCEPT HEALTH INSURANCE FOR PAYMENT?

I am in network for Blue Cross Blue Shield (PPO plans), Aetna, and United Healthcare, and accept it as a form of payment.

I DO NOT HAVE HEALTH INSURANCE, AND I HAVE FINANCIAL HARDSHIPS. CAN YOU SEE ME FOR A REDUCED SESSION FEE?

I may have a limited number of slots for those whom I see for reduced fee based on financial hardships.  I may request for evidence of financial hardship if you are interested in being seen for a reduced fee.  I can also provide assistance in locating providers in the community where you can receive clinical services at a lower rate, as needed and appropriate.

HOW "BUDGET-FRIENDLY" ARE YOUR GROUP COUNSELING SESSIONS, LIFE SKILLS CLASSES, AND WORKSHOPS?

The fees for group counseling appointments, life skills classes, and workshops will depend on a variety of factors.  Some of the life skills classes and workshops may be free, while there may be a charge of somewhere between $10 to $50 per person.  For group counseling appointments, the fees will depend on the number of participants in the group, the frequency of appointments, etc.

WHAT HAPPENS AT MY FIRST APPOINTMENT?

At your first appointment for individual psychotherapy, I will be conducting an interview called "intake assessment" in which I will be asking you a series of questions about your background information, presenting concerns, current symptoms and their impact on your functioning, physical/mental health history, alcohol/substance use, family/social/academic/career history, developmental history, and goals for therapy.  I also provide you with a brief "introduction to counseling" in which we will discuss what to expect from counseling, and address any questions or concerns that you may have.

DO YOU PRESCRIBE MEDICATIONS?

As a licensed psychologist, I do not prescribe medications.  If you are interested in taking medications for mental health reasons, I would be happy to refer you to providers who are legally authorized to prescribe them.

DO YOU OFFER COUPLES THERAPY?

At this time, I am not taking clients for couples/marital therapy.  If you are interested in couples therapy, I would be happy to refer you to providers that I know who are accepting new patients for such services.

WHAT AGE GROUP DO YOU WORK WITH?

I am currently taking clients who are 18 and over.  If you are interested in scheduling an appointment for those who are 17 or younger, I will refer you to providers that I know who are accepting children/adolescents for therapy services.

DO YOU FILE CLAIMS FOR INSURANCE AS AN OUT-OF-NETWORK PROVIDER?

I do not file claims for insurance as an out-of-network provider on my clients' behalf.  However, I will be happy to provide, upon request, the service receipts for your appointments with me that you can submit to your insurance company on your own.  Also for those of you who are paying out of pocket (i.e., those who are using insurance that I am not in network for, or those who are not using insurance), I can provide a written summary of the estimated cost for treatment called "Good Faith Estimate," so that there will be no "unpleasant surprises" on your bill, upon request.

WHAT ARE YOUR APPOINTMENT HOURS?

My current appointment hours are as follows:

Tuesdays:  6:00pm-8:00pm
Thursdays:  6:00pm-8:00pm
Saturdays:  8:00am-6:00pm

I may occasionally have time slots outside of these hours above, depending on your schedule constraints and my availability.

ARE YOU SEEING YOUR CLIENTS AT YOUR OFFICE IN-PERSON NOW?

I am currently taking both telehealth and in-person appointments.

Attentive Therapist

HOW OFTEN DO I NEED TO SEE YOU FOR THERAPY APPOINTMENTS?

It will depend on various factors, such as the nature of your presenting concerns, your availability, my schedule, etc.  Generally speaking, I typically see my clients once a week every week for the first 3-6 sessions.  However, I may start by seeing them once every two weeks, if meeting every week is not possible or appropriate.

My overall goal is NOT to keep you in therapy forever--although the frequency and duration of therapy appointments may vary from client to client, I typically strive to go from meeting weekly to every other week, then to once a month, and eventually to "as needed" basis.
